The vision of how101 began in 1998 after a group of 12 women traveled to Uganda on a mission trip. Not knowing what to expect, the team experienced firsthand the immense poverty and problems mixed with the intense joy and resilience of the people. It was apparent that both sides had something to give and to learn from one another. We were surely not equipped to begin anything big…but we could begin to help one at a time…on both sides!
And so the story began…
By 2002 a personal educational sponsorship program had begun in Uganda for young mothers and their children. By 2007 a uniquely different sponsorship program for abandoned boys began in Kenya. Sponsor connections were being made and changing lives (on both sides) one by one…
A small group stayed the course as the needs grew. In 2009 how101 officially became a non-profit dedicated to education, health and welfare of youth at extreme risk. By now it was apparent that education alone was not the answer.
Strategic help for the single mothers, guardians and community began. In 2010 how101 hosted the first Annual Starfish Camp for children and youth in the program. These days set aside for enrichment, mentoring and simply fun through learning together proved invaluable. Separately we began intentional support days for the young mothers, aunties, grandparents or guardians who were raising these kids…most of whom are critically poor conditions.
How do you really help one at a time?
Rescue. Rehabilitate. Educate. Reintegrate
And who does this?
We believe in empowering local staff and volunteers on the ground in Uganda and Kenya who mentor and guide each one according to their abilities. This coupled with consistent and committed support from sponsor families and the how101 team ensure the best possible outcome for a young person.
Whenever possible we encourage self-sustaining endeavors and support with each country.
The goal for each is to become contributing members in their home community.
Currently over 200 children and young adults are being equipped and educated. 125 sponsor families are personally involved and experiencing authentic life with these kids.
How can YOU help? As you hear over and over “the needs are great, the resources are lean”. This is true with us as well, yet we will tell you that your support and funding goes a long way to make a lasting impact on individual lives and community. We witness it and invite you to witness it with us!
