    PLANNING FOR STARFISH CAMP

Camp will be in May this year and plans are underway for a fabulous week of fellowship, learning and fun! The theme is GRATITUDE and we are grateful for all our donors who make camp possible for the 200+ kids in Uganda. If you sponsor a child please remember to write a letter to your child so they can receive it at camp. Also, now is the time to contribute to the Basic Necessities fund. The children will be leaving camp with new bedding.

BUILDING A SAFE & PERMANENT HOME

New land has been acquired, basic shelters have been built, the greenhouse and gardens are producing food and the ground has been broken for a new home for the Taraja boys and staff. We’ve raised about half of the necessary funds please help us “Raise the Roof!”

  • 2023 FALL TEAM UGANDA

    SUPPORT THE TEAM

The 2024 Spring Team is busily making travel plans and raising funds for their trip to Uganda and Kenya to help at camp and Taraja Family Home. Please keep them in your prayers. We are so grateful for their sense of adventure and willingness to travel and help us make a difference in the children’s lives.

Jerry Spurlock

September 4, 1950 - March 7, 2024

We invite you to honor Jerry Spurlock’s memory with a gift to his memorial fund. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, friend, volunteer and HOW101 sponsor and his legacy lives on in the love he shared and the lives he impacted.

Here he is pictured with the very first Starfish child, Vivian, who is now a university graduate and school teacher and with the Taraja boys when he taught them how to play baseball!

HOPE. OPPORTUNITY. CONNECTION.

Help Our World One on One (HOW101) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides sponsorship for vulnerable children in Uganda and Kenya so that they can have access to education, mentors and healthcare. Our mission is to help them reach their full potential and inspire hope in their communities.

HOW101 works with community-based organizations in each country to connect one child to one sponsor because we know that both sides learn and grow from their relationship.

Child Sponsorship

Education is a pathway out of poverty because of the many opportunities it can create. We match donors who understand this, with children in need of support for school fees and requirements.

Underlying Support

Money for tuition and school supplies isn’t enough. These children need mentoring and support to be able to thrive. Our partner agencies in each country follow and support each child’s progress.

Help for Health

With over 230 children in our programs health issues continually arise — be it a broken bone, malaria, or a dental issue — we can make a real difference by being able to provide funds for their care. By donating to this fund, you ensure that monies will be available when needed for emergencies and whenever possible preventative care like new mosquito nets for beds.

Benevolent Fund

Our in-country partners have requested the establishment of a Benevolent Fund to provide assistance to families in dire need. This fund is intended to help families in extreme situations that might impact the child’s safety and well-being.

“I’ve been sponsoring George since he was 6 years old for his school fees. This is my 3rd reunion with him. He was born in a Kampala slum to a 15-year-old Mum. At 20, he excels in school, is a responsible young man, and has many goals including attending university to be a software engineer. He told me “Mum, you changed my life by sponsoring and loving me. I will succeed and I’m committed to life other young people up.” I’m so proud of him! My cup is overflowing with George — thank you HOW101 (help our world one on one) for this opportunity to make a difference in one life that will impact many lives.”

Since 1998…26 years of
growing together

It started with a women’s mission trip to Uganda in 1998 where it was apparent that all involved had something to give and learn from one another. We were not equipped to do anything big but we could begin to help one-by-one.

Our Team

Making it all work takes the collective efforts of ALL our sponsors, donors, and in-country partners, but we couldn’t do any of it without our core group of volunteers who stay true to the mission day-by-day.
